Summer bass are stacked deep on main lake structure but moving shallow early and late when they can get comfortable

WATER 82°FAIR 85°FWIND 11 MPHSEASON SUMMER

We're in full summer pattern with water hitting the upper 80s, so bass are pulling deep to stay comfortable during the heat of the day. The reports show fish holding on main lake points, channel swings, and timber in 12-25 feet, then sliding up to shallow grass and flats when the light gets low. With pressure rising after some weather passed through, they might be a little finicky at first, but if clouds roll in with this southwest wind, the shallow bite could fire up earlier than usual. The shad are schooled up thick on the flats, and bass are relating to that bait pretty tight.

The day's game plan

EARLY MORNING · 5:30-7:00 AM
Shallow grass lines and pond weed, 1-4 feet
Yellow Magic popper walked slow over grass beds, or white Zoom Super Fluke weightless and twitched
Bass move up shallow to feed before the sun gets high and heats the water, if you've got some cloud cover they'll stay up longer
MORNING · 7:00-10:00 AM
First drop off the grass, 4-7 feet with timber or stumps nearby
1/2 oz white chatterbait with white trailer, steady retrieve, or 2.5 squarebill in bream pattern bumping stumps
Fish start pulling off the flats as the sun comes up but they're still feeding aggressive before the heat really sets in
MIDDAY · 10:00 AM-3:00 PM
Main lake points and channel swings, 12-18 feet
Carolina rig with 7 inch green pumpkin worm or creature bait, drag it slow on the bottom
Bass slide out to deeper structure when the sun gets high and water heats up, they'll still bite but you got to slow down and fish right on them
LATE AFTERNOON · 3:00-6:00 PM
Deep points and roadbeds, 18-25 feet
Deep diving crankbait in shad pattern, DD22 or similar, steady retrieve over structure
Fish are still deep but starting to position for the evening move, if the wind picks up and clouds move in they might start sliding shallower
EVENING · 6:00-7:30 PM
Secondary points and flats with grass, 5-8 feet
Spinnerbait with white/chartreuse skirt and silver blade, slow roll over grass tops
Bass start their move back shallow as the sun angle drops and water cools a bit, they're looking for those shad schools on the flats
DUSK · 7:30-9:00 PM
Shallow grass lines and bream beds, 2-4 feet
Buzzbait in white or frog over thick grass and pockets
Best shallow bite of the day when bass move up to feed heavy before dark, low light makes them more comfortable in skinny water
NIGHT · 9:00 PM-5:30 AM
Docks with brush and shallow points, 3-8 feet
Black jig with craw trailer pitched tight to cover, or black spinnerbait slow rolled
Night fishing lets you target shallow cover when bass feel safe to feed, dark baits show up better against the surface

Pro tips

If conditions change

If a front moves in and pressure drops, fish will get more aggressive shallow, so stay with reaction baits longer. If it gets slick calm and sunny, downsize everything and fish deeper structure slower. If the wind picks up, work the windy banks where baitfish get pushed and bass follow.
