Do Solunar Tables Actually Work for Bass?

This is the one factor where we will not tell you what you want to hear. Solunar theory says fish feed hardest when the moon is directly overhead or directly underfoot — the majors — with smaller windows at moonrise and moonset. Anglers report the correlation constantly. The best controlled study of it found nothing.

What the evidence says

Hanson and Cooke's 2008 work at Carleton University tracked largemouth activity against the lunar cycle directly and reported no evidence of an effect. That is a real result from a real study and we are not going to bury it.

Against that sits a very large body of angler observation, and the fact that solunar periods are not independent of things that clearly do matter — they correlate with tide, with light, and with the time of day windows that are already the strongest predictor on the board.

How BassHawk handles it

We score it, and we cap what it can do. Solunar is worth at most 5 of the 105 points in the model — the smallest weight of any factor, below water level. Majors get roughly twice the pull of minors, and outside every window the factor falls to a low baseline.

That is the appropriate weight for a factor with contested evidence: enough that a major landing on top of dawn shows up in the score, not enough to send you out at noon in August because the moon was overhead.

How to use it

Use solunar as a tiebreaker, never as a plan. If two mornings this week look the same on temperature, pressure and wind, take the one where a major overlaps first light. If a major falls at 1 PM on a bluebird post-frontal day, it is not going to save you.
