Lake Hartwell is a 56,000-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Savannah River, formed by Hartwell Dam about seven miles below where the Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers converge; full pool sits at 660 ft MSL with a max depth near 185 ft. The lake splits into two major arms - the Tugaloo River arm (GA side, more rocky bluffs and clearer highland water up past I-85) and the Seneca River arm (SC side, toward Clemson) - that join at the Big Water main-lake basin near the dam. It is a premier blueback-herring fishery, so long tapering main-lake and secondary points, humps, brush piles, and standing timber near deep water are prime structure, and herring-imitating topwater, jerkbaits, and underspins shine when fish are chasing bait up shallow. Seasonally: spring pushes bass into pockets and coves to spawn, summer scatters spotted bass deep on offshore points and brush while herring schools roam, fall brings a strong topwater bite as bass follow shad and herring back toward the backs of creeks, and winter concentrates heavy spotted bass on deep main-lake and river-channel structure.
