West Point Lake is a 25,864-acre Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Chattahoochee River, impounded by West Point Dam (1975) and stretching about 34 miles north from West Point, GA toward Franklin, with LaGrange on its eastern shore. Summer pool sits at 635 ft MSL, dropping to a 628-ft winter pool; it is a fairly deep, rocky lake with a mean depth of 23 ft and a maximum near 85 ft at the dam. Major fish-holding tributary arms include Yellowjacket, New River, Wehadkee, Whitewater, Maple, Veasey and Stroud creeks, plus the mid-lake ledges, humps and hundreds of shoal-marker poles and boat docks. Classically a fertile pea-green largemouth factory, the lake has cleared and grown less nutrient-rich, shifting toward more spotted bass, though largemouth fishing remains strong around shallow wood, brush, riprap and baitfish schools. Seasonally, pre-spawn March fish move shallow to fast-moving ChatterBaits, squarebills, spinnerbaits and Rat-L-Traps; April-May bass spawn on sloping gravel banks and pockets, while summer pushes fish to deep points, ledges and the river channel keyed on shad and blueback herring.
