The fishery

Lake Travis is a 18,930-acre LCRA reservoir on the Colorado River in the Texas Hill Country, just NW of Austin. Formed by Mansfield Dam (278 ft, completed 1942) on the lower end and extending 64 miles upstream toward Marble Falls. Conservation pool 681 ft msl with frequent 10-30 ft annual drawdown — Travis fluctuates more than any other major Texas reservoir, exposing or submerging huge amounts of cover seasonally. Max depth 210 ft at the dam, average 62 ft. Structure dominated by Hill Country rock — limestone bluffs, rocky points, ledges — with flooded juniper/cedar in the major creek arms (Cypress, Sandy, Pedernales) when the lake is high. Bass run smaller than other Texas lakes but produce excellent numbers. Largemouth dominate; Guadalupe bass (the Texas state fish, river-strain spotted bass) are present in the upper reaches. Major arms: main Colorado River (west, upstream), Sandy Creek (NW), Cypress Creek (north central), Pedernales River (far west), Hudson Bend (south central peninsula). Hudson Bend, Lakeway, and the dam area are most developed. Pace Bend Park (TX state park) is the largest public access on the lake.
